Planning The Suburban Garden 6 - Planning Planting Part 1

The Ideal Garden image of a shrub
What plants you want to put in your garden is, of course, very much a personal taste and, in its way, it's what gardening is all about.

However, here are some ideas that may help you make a start on the big decisions of how to plan and what to plant. This is, I think, one of the most enjoyable parts of gardening, particular because it can be done in front of a warm fire in an armchair in Winter!

How to plan
We covered how to design a garden with pencil and paper and also with computer a long time ago and a click on the 'design' label will bring up some posts for you to look through.

Having discussed the 'Many Rooms' idea, the idea is to populate those rooms or, if you only have one room and thus a small garden, to populate that.

I like the idea of having different areas and different gardens in each area so you have a shrub garden, a herb area and a flower area each of which can have it's own feature of, say, a pond, an archway and a seating area.

The range of possibilities is enormous from elaborate and carefully done desert gardens (they look wonderful but a little stark to my mind) to water features that cover much of an area both open and under decking or concrete.

A little of what you fancy
I think the way to plan is to take a little of what you fancy and put it in each of the 'rooms'. If you have just a couple of big 'rooms' or only one 'room' then combine two ideas into one area, with one flowing into the other.

If you have room then it's good to have a connecting theme to join the 'rooms' together such as the same pattern of path or hedge or fence as this provides a link from one area to another.

But the most important part is, of course, the plants and we will look at this next.
